But in order to stay with, or hopefully ahead, of competition, it&#039;s key to keep testing new tactics to see if they&#039;re right for your business and audience. Even if it means a temporary cut back on some proven tactics.

I like your approach to social+offline, and maybe that&#039;s a good perspective for testing new tactics. Instead of pitting a new tactic against a proven tactic, the approach should probably be to integrate the new tactic with the proven, and measure the resulting lift or decrease in response/revenue.

		<description>It&#039;s hard to keep your spend on DM the same, but also spend a little on social media, because the two are often thrown together in the same bucket. After all, what is more direct than social media. 

I agree wholeheartedly that you shouldn&#039;t venture into social media waters until you have a plan of attack, especially on the tracking side as David suggests. 

We&#039;re run direct marketing programs for our clients that commingle snail mail and social media/microsites to bring an element of web tracking to direct mail. It is possible to do both with great success.
